The top panel plots the S&P 500 daily close as a black line chart.
The bottom panel shows five colored lines tracking how many S&P 500 stocks meet different trend criteria based on moving averages:
Green = 4 of 4 signals (strongest trend)
Lime = 3 of 4 signals
Gray = 2 of 4 signals
Red = 1 of 4 signals
Dark red = 0 of 4 signals (no trend)
The Takeaway: This model tracks how many S&P 500 stocks are in confirmed uptrends — based on four simple criteria: both the 50-day and 200-day moving averages are rising, price is above the 50-day, and the 50-day is above the 200-day.
When a stock meets all four, it’s in a full uptrend.
Right now, 180 stocks — that’s 36% of the index — are trending on all cylinders.
That’s the highest reading in nearly seven months, and a clear shift from the weakness we saw in early April.
More importantly, the number of stocks stuck in 0 or 1 of 4 conditions is falling.
That tells us the laggards are thinning out — and the leadership base is expanding.
When fewer stocks are dragging and more are trending, the market has fuel — not friction.
This model doesn’t chase noise — it tracks structure.
And structure is improving.
When enough names move together, the index doesn’t grind higher — it lifts.
